Criminal Justice, Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

The Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice provides a foundation in criminological, sociological, and psychological ideas as it relates to criminal justice. Graduates will gain the knowledge, technical skills, and communication skills to meet the demands in occupations such as law enforcement, criminological research, crime analysis, the courts, adult and juvenile justice, and public safety. This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment rather than to transfer to a four-year college or university. All courses must be passed with “C” or better. Developmental courses will not be applied to the degree.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will be able to:
- Discuss the criminal justice system, specifically, the roles of citizens, police, courts, and corrections.
- Give examples of standards of conduct for investigative, evidence collection, and procedural processes.
- Explain basic constitutional legal procedural rights afforded criminally accused citizens in the United States.
- Distinguish between the adult and juvenile justice systems including procedural differences and the distinct and overlapping roles of each.
- Demonstrate communication skills needed to incorporate information obtained in typical police calls and investigative situations into reports.
- Analyze ethical issues and dilemmas of the criminal justice system.
